Insurance for Tile & Marble Contractors

Tile and marble contractors need general liability insurance to cover property damage (scratched surfaces, cracked tiles, grout issues) and bodily injury claims. Workers' compensation covers employees injured during installation. Inland marine covers tile saws, grinders, and other tools. If you also fabricate stone countertops, make sure your policy includes fabrication operations.

Your general liability policy covers damage to the client's property caused by your operations, but it does not cover the tile and materials themselves — that would be covered under a material damage or installation floater. If you crack a piece of expensive marble during installation, GL responds to the resulting property damage claim to the client's property, but the replacement material cost may need to be handled separately.

In California, tile contractors need a C-54 license from the CSLB for ceramic and mosaic tile work. Nevada, Arizona, and Utah have similar requirements for tile work above certain contract values.
