Commercial auto covers your vehicles, and inland marine covers your test equipment, meters, tools, and wire reels. Electrical contractors who provide design or engineering services — or work on design-build projects — should also consider professional liability (E&O) coverage.

Yes. California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and Texas all require electrical contractors to hold a valid license and maintain general liability insurance as a condition of that license. California requires CSLB classification C-10. Nevada requires an EC license from the NSCB. Each state sets minimum insurance requirements, and failure to maintain them can result in license suspension.

Yes. If your completed electrical work is later found to have caused a fire due to faulty installation, your general liability policy (specifically the completed operations component) would cover the resulting bodily injury and property damage claims. This is one of the most important coverages for electrical contractors given the potential severity of electrical fire claims.

If you provide electrical design services, prepare load calculations, or specify equipment as part of your scope, you have professional liability exposure beyond your standard GL. Electrical engineers and design-build electricians should carry professional liability (E&O) in addition to general liability. If you only perform installation per plans and specifications provided by others, GL may be sufficient.
