Nevada Contractor Licensing and Insurance Requirements (2025)

January 20, 2025 · 7 min read

Nevada has specific licensing and insurance requirements for contractors operating in the state. Whether you're a California contractor looking to expand into Nevada or a local business, understanding what's required will keep your license in good standing and your business protected.

Nevada Contractor Licensing: The State Contractors Board (NSCB)

Nevada contractors are licensed through the Nevada State Contractors Board (NSCB). With few exceptions, anyone who contracts to construct, alter, repair, or demolish any structure in Nevada for compensation must hold a valid license.

Licenses are classified by trade and project type. Common license classifications include:

  • Class A: General engineering contractor
  • Class B: General building contractor
  • Class C: Specialty contractor (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing, etc.)

Insurance Requirements for Nevada Contractors

General Liability Insurance

Nevada requires licensed contractors to carry general liability insurance as a condition of licensure. Minimum limits vary by license classification, but most contractors need at least:

  • Class A and B: $500,000 per occurrence
  • Class C specialty contractors: $100,000 to $500,000 depending on trade

The NSCB must be listed as a certificate holder on your GL policy. Many GCs and commercial clients will require higher limits of $1M/$2M or more regardless of the state minimum.

Workers' Compensation Insurance

If you have employees in Nevada — even just one — workers' compensation is mandatory. Nevada is a monopolistic state for workers' comp, meaning coverage must be purchased through Employers Insurance Company of Nevada (EICN) or a private carrier certified in the state.

Sole proprietors without employees may be able to waive this requirement, but should do so carefully as it leaves personal injury exposure uncovered.

Contractor License Bond (Surety Bond)

Nevada requires contractors to post a surety bond as part of the licensing process. Bond amounts vary by license class:

  • Class A and B: $50,000
  • Class C: $10,000 to $30,000 depending on specialty

The bond protects the public and ensures contractors comply with state laws. It must remain active throughout the license period.

Las Vegas and Clark County Considerations

Most work in Nevada is concentrated in Clark County (Las Vegas/Henderson) and Washoe County (Reno). Both require contractors to register locally in addition to holding a state license. Clark County projects often have additional insurance requirements for commercial work, particularly for projects on the Strip or in casino/hotel facilities.

Do California Contractors Need a Separate Nevada License?

Yes. A California CSLB license does not allow you to work in Nevada. You must obtain a separate NSCB license. However, Nevada does offer a reciprocal licensing path for California contractors that can streamline the process — contact the NSCB for details.
